Kano State Trains 3500 Vigilante Members on Literacy

His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR today attended the 2017/2018 Post International Literacy Day Celebration and the graduation ceremony of 3500 Vigilante Members in the state.

In his remarks, Governor Ganduje stated that the importance of literacy cannot be over emphasized, especially in a state like Kano with its high population and high rate of illiteracy. He added that in order to eradicate high rate of illiteracy thats why his administration is according mass education priority, which is why his government is renovating all the mass literacy education centres in the state, and equipping them with right tools. He added that it is his desire, to drastically reduce the number of illiterates in Kano.

The event which is organized to mark the world literacy day as declared by UNESCO, is aimed at ensuring that all the people in Kano have become literate in line with millennium development goals. It will be recalled that Kano was the 1st state in Nigeria to establish the Agency for Mass Education during the tenure of Late Abubakar Rimi, which is still rendering its services in the state.

The administration of Governor Ganduje has so for sponsored 3500 members of the vigilante group back to School through the agency for mass education and are now receiving their School leaving certificates, with brand new complete uniform sets that include boots, belts, caps and other kits for 10,0000 vigilante members in the state worth N200Million.

The Executive Secretary of the National Mass Education Commission Prof Abba Abubakar Haladu in his goodwill message, said that such an event is indeed commendable, especially as the state government is marking the day by graduating the 3500 vigilante members in basic and post literacy education. He also highlighted some of the achievements being undertaken by the federal government.

Governor Ganduje then handed over cettificates to the graduating vigilante members, and also handed over computer sets to the agency for Mass Education. The Governor also received an award for his contributions to Education in Kano, and he also gave awards onbehalf of the agency to the Deputy Governor who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, as well as others for their roles in the development of the education sector.
